Rules Of The Road

  • Wear a helmet. This is mandatory to participate in the Tour.
  • Never wear headphones or talk on your cell phone while riding.
  • Obey all traffic laws, signs and signals. This includes traffic lights and stop signs. For more information about traffic law and cycling refer to the Bike Texas website.
  • Follow the instructions of Ride Marshals, Medics and Police Officers—they are looking out for your safety.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic, as far to the right as is safe. The two exceptions to this rule are for turning left at an intersection and for passing another vehicle.
  • Ride no more than two side-by-side in a single lane.
  • Pass on the left only. Before passing, be sure it is clear. When passing another cyclist, call out “ON YOUR LEFT.” Allow plenty of room before pulling back in to the right.
  • Do not cross center line regardless of passing zone.
  • Use proper signals when turning. Make left turns from the center of the road or left turn lane.
  • Maintain your personal space. Ride smoothly and predictably in a straight line. Avoid sudden sideways movements.
  • Be in control of your bike at all times (i.e. being able to stop within a reasonable distance).
  • Respect the communities along the route. They support the mission to end MS and they support you.
